I also wanted to let you know of a great event happening on Sunday 20th, on www.imagefm.ca, at 4pm Eastern Time, 9pm GMT. ( Check time for for your zone ).

Having joined MySpace and Facebook several years ago, I have hundreds of band on my friend lists. Of all of these, one Canadian band, "Dame", a progressive-power-pop female trio from Toronto really stood out and sparked my interest almost 2 years ago.

Back in August they won Canada's YouDiscover.ca Band of the Year, beating hundreds of really good bands along the way. Among their prizes were a recording contract, and a fabulous gig supporting Styx for a televised New Years Eve special from Niagara Falls.

In the course of the recording arrangements, there was a name change to "Moeraes Fate" ( Greek legend reference ).

So this Sunday you can watch the band play and celebrate the festive season at their Christmas Special on ImageFm.ca. I'm reliably informed they will be sticking to a Christmas theme, so there should be some fun and frolics.

I wouldn't normally stick my neck out, but I think these girls can be part of the future of Rock Music, which is in sad decline right now. You can check out samples of the songs from their new recording on their MySpace page at http://www.myspace.com/moeraesfateband

Set your reminders! Start time is at 4pm Eastern Time, so adjust to your time zone accordingly - it will be 9pm here in Ireland (GMT).

See you there!

Ragtime Guitar Lessons - Blind Blake lesson by Jim Bruce

I thought I'd spice up the Guitar Tips blog a little by adding some lessons and tips from some of the more 'niche' areas.

Now I know not everyone will aspire to being a 'full-time' Ragtime Blues player, but it is a style that almost everyone really likes, and a neat addition to any guitar player's repertoire, whether you mainly play, rock, blues, acoustic - whatever.

Jim Bruce has an entire course on learning the Blind Blake style of Ragtime Blues Guitar, Jim both plays and teaches this really catchy style with extreme professionalism and enthusiasm.

This video clip is just a taster (5m.02s) to fill you in on what Ragtime Blues ( a la Blake ) should sound like, and how to begin learning the style. I think you'll love it!

If you like what you heard, and want to be able to amaze your friends with this superb skill, you can find out more about this great course at the link below:

Practice Tips for Lead Guitar Players

Thanks (again!) to Dan Denley, who has been a major contributor to this Guitar Tips blog since it was launched

Dan has a wealth of guitar learning programs teaching you about every aspect of guitar playing, including AmazingGuitarSecrets, BluesGuitar Secrets, AcousticGuitarSecrets and LeadGuitarSecrets. Dan is a fanatic and is always working on a new targetted course, or on new and improved versions of existing courses.

He is shortly to launch version 2.0 of his Blues course ( BluesGuitar Secrets 2.0 ) and has given me permission to release some 'sneak previews' to my Blog readers. These short video clips fit in perfectly with my own aim for this Blog of providing short but helpful articles and lessons covering as many areas of guitar playing as possible, and catering for all levels of ability. So, while these 'mini-lessons' will give you a taster of what Dan's course can do for you, they are in themselves very useful tips.

This one is taken from DVD2 of the LeadGuitarSecrets course, and shows you three different rhythming patterns to use while practicing your scales. We all know that scales practice is a crucial, but not the most exciting part of being a guitar player, so any tips for keeping it interesting have got to be worth hearing!

Blues Guitar Chord progressions - D minor

Dan Denley has again kindly provided another video guitar lesson for my Blog readers. Dan has a whole bunch of fantastic guitar learning programs, including AmazingGuitarSecrets, BluesGuitar Secrets, AcousticGuitarSecrets and LeadGuitarSecrets and is always working to improve and upgrade them, as well as periodically developing new lessons covering yet another area of guitar music.

This lesson is taken from DVD 5 (Blues Guitar Progressions) of his Ultimate Guide to Chords course, a fully comprehensive learning program which gets you to understand the REASONS for playing particular chord patterns, or why a particular scale is suited for playing lead over a chord sequence. For me, this course bridges the gap between theory and practice which has always been my difficulty. The split videos ( showing both fretting and chording hands close-up ), along with the audio samples and tabs for each lesson, and the textual instruction from the manuals really bring it all together in a manner which is relevant to how you play guitar in the REAL world.

This mini-lesson is a short extract from Ultimate Guide to Chords showing how you can transform certain chord patterns just by changing tempo, and slightly adjusting the format of the dominant key - in this example he slows down a Dm7 chord set, switching the Dm7 for a Dm9, producing a really nice minor blues sequence.

Once again the video is split to show both the picking and the chording hands simultaneously in close-up.

I am sure you will find this lesson useful, and it should give you just a taster of what is available from the course:

Guitar Chord Progressions

Another video lesson from Dan Denley.

He has recently released his latest learning resource - Ultimate Guide to Chords, which, for me, is the definitive learning program for understanding chord theory, how chords relate to scales AND how to put this into practice to improve your playing. I am honoured that he has once again selected this Guitar Tips blog to preview his Ultimate Guide to Chords .

The preview is a short lesson (just over 7 minutes) on video explaining, using the Roman Numeral System, how to harmonize guitar chords with any scale being played, and how to figure which scales should be played for any guitar chord progression.

When you see guitar players who can seemingly effortlessly sit in on a session, and play hot licks along with the chords being played, there is usually nothing instinctive about this, but a whole background of chord and scales theory learning, leading up to this ability.

This lesson ( 7m 13s) takes the C major and minor scales, shows the differentiation between the scale notes played for each, and shows how these notes can be played right across the fretboard. It then shows how to transpose what you've learned to the other keys.

Once again the video is split to show both the picking and the chording hands simultaneously in close-up.

Chordie - The missing links!

Those of you who regularly use Chordie will have seen frequent
messages for several songs indicating that "The person hosting
these songs has asked them to be removed from the Chordie index"

Apologies, but I am that person! I'm sorry if you've been frustrated
by seeing these messages instead of your requested song chords, but
permission was never given to Chordie to use these songs, and they
have graciously removed them at my request. I would have preferred if
they had instead replaced their pages with links to my original

Anywaze, you can find all 1,800 of 'em at PJ's Guitar Chords and

right up to songs in the current charts.

How To Play a Blues Solo

Another video lesson from Dan Denley. The preview is a mini lesson on video ( plus tab ) showing how to play a Blues solo, which I guess is something most guitar players aspire to doing. Most jam sessions I've sat in on will at some point feature someone bursting into a 12-bar Blues riff, and it's great when you know you can join in and amaze everyone with your blues licks to accomany the chords being played. But, as I might have guessed, he has surpassed himself once again - this is the most complete and well-presented instruction set I have EVER seen for acoustic guitar players, whether at the early stages of learning or for the already proficient player.

There are 5 DVD's (7 hours approx) with video and audio lessons, 2 audio CD's with 127 acoustic guitar tracks, backed up by a 135 page detailed instruction manual with music notation as well as tab for each of the lessons, cross-referenced with the DVDs and CDs. Joe Satriani signed guitar Giveaway - winner announced!

Hi there!

Regular readers of my Blog will know that my friends at MusicPower.com kindly helped me celebrate my website hitting the 15 Million visitor mark with a very special Giveaway - a wonderful Joe Satriani ( Satch ) signed Ibanez electric guitar.

To put you out of your suspense, the winner has been drawn and is....

NICLAS from SWEDEN!!! Congratulations Niclas!!!!!!

Niclas ( 18 ) started playing drums at the age of 8, and moved on to playing guitar in his early teens. He is a fan of Joe Satriani and finds his music inspiring, but at heart is a throwback to 1970's Glam Rock, naming Alice Cooper, Kiss and Motley Crue among his major influences.

In improving himself as a guitarist, he listens to Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Paul Gilber, as well as "Satch" of course, these players, he says "have inspired me in another way"

So there it is, congrats again to Niclas, and I hope he gets much joy from this unique prize. To everyone else, sorry - if I could have organized for each of you to have won a guitar I would have been thrilled, but alas, we live in the REAL world!

If you haven't already, you should check out the great range and value in guitars, gear and all manner of instruments at Music-Power.Com , I really believe that whatever guitar you have your mind set on, you won't find it at a better price in any other online or High Street Store.

More song chords and lyrics very soon!

Enjoy your music,

PJ
